IIT KGP was established in the year 1951. It was the first Indian Institute of Technology to be established in the country and recognized as an institution of national importance. Admission to most undergraduate and postgraduate courses in IIT Kharagpur is through written entrance examinations. Admissions to M.S. and PhD programs are based on written tests followed by personal interviews.
Internationally, IIT Kharagpur is ranked 286 in the QS World University Rankings of 2015 and 60 in the QS Asian University Rankings of 2014.

Admission to undergraduate programs in all IITs is through a Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). Candidates who qualify the admission through IIT-JEE can apply for admission in four-year BTech (Bachelor of Technology), five-year B.Arch degree, five-year Dual Degree (Integrated Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology) and five-year integrated MSc (Master of Sciences) courses at IIT Kharagpur. The admissions to postgraduate programmes (MTech) are made primarily through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
The international placements in IITKGP began in 2006. Two foreign oil giants Schlumberger and Royal Dutch Shell, visited IIT Kharagpur that year and offered annual salaries to the tune of $80,000.According to IT magazine Dataquest’s annual survey, IIT Kharagpur is the second best technology college in terms of providing placement in India.
The top domestic compensation in 2008 came in at Rs 1.8 million per annum. In 2011 batch, Goldman Sachs recruited 10 students on a package of 2.6 million per annum.
Some of the top recruiters that conduct campus drives at IITKGP are Auctus Advisors, Baker Hughes, BMGI, Capgemini, Cisco, Facebook, Flipkart, ITC. The students get selected in great numbers and are placed with amazing packages in reputed firms every year.
Life at IIT Kharagpur
There are a number of options for residential facilities for students, research scholars and faculty members too. There are rooms for each students and a large number of halls. As part of extra -curricular activities the students can get themselves enrolled with any of the clubs of their choice. The students choose between National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Sports Organization (NSO) for their first two years of their study here. A number of societies and cells for the students are also there. They include entrepreneurship cell, Space Technology Students Society, Technology Filmmaking and Photography Society, Technology Transfer Group to name a few.
The institution also celebrates a number of fests and occasions for the students.
